I thank Dr Ente for his reply, which, in addition to indicating his interest in the subject, provides a summary of many points under discussion in the alternative medicine debate.
Respect for the editorial policy of the ARCHIVES led me to believe that common sense, rather than the mere concern for free speech, necessitated the publication of my letter. The question of alternative medicine leaves little room for acknowledgment of differing opinions. It is based on attacks to the integrity of medicine, the relevance of science, and the effectiveness of modern clinical practice. These views may occasionally be voiced in the American Medical Association press, but they do not promote our profession.1,2
