We thank Dr Kaplan for her comments regarding our recently published study titled "Are Overweight Children Unhappy? Body Mass Index, Depressive Symptoms, and Overweight Concerns in Elementary School Children."1 Dr Kaplan has highlighted some of the important issues that we addressed in our article (the modest association between depressive symptoms and BMI in girls; potential ethnic differences; our ethnically diverse sample; the importance of prevention efforts regarding eating disorder behaviors; and the importance of childhood obesity as a public health risk). Regarding her statement about the suitability of the KEDS for children in the third grade, previous studies using the KEDS have included children aged as young as 9 years. Our finding that the KEDS discriminated among third-grade girls (8-9 years old) seems to be stronger evidence of its usefulness in this age group than the typical reliability and internal consistency studies.
