This monograph is based on studies resulting from the Problems of the Premature read at the Congreso Sudamericano de Pediatria in Buenos Aires in 1949 and 1950. It contains chapters on the definition of prematurity and statistics on the frequency, causes of mortality, and the initial crisis of the premature infant.

The subjects are dealt with in a complete fashion. Not only are the literature and statistics from the author's own locality thoroughly studied, but also those from other foreign countries. The chapter on statistics is of particular interest, as the mortality from different countries is split up into weights of the premature infants, day of death, sex, and other interesting subdivisions. The chapters on care of the premature infant are complete, and controversial subjects are fairly met. The conclusions are that much can be done to reduce the mortality of the premature infant by standards of care and hospital
