In this book, the author's approach has been to discuss all of the known phenomena related to the immunity to infection. As is pointed out, there are many factors besides humoral antibody immunity to consider, but none are as well studied or understood. However, in the book there is a review of much of what is known about these factors, as concerns both the virulence of the parasite and the defenses of the host. Since the major studies in the field of immunity have been concerned with antibody immunity, there is a logical extension into the fundamentals of serology and a review of pertinent material about antigens, antibodies, and complement and their interactions. Following this there are several chapters on the epidemiological aspects and effect of environmental factors on the several kinds of immunity discussed.
