This short and readable volume is both stimulating and encouraging, although it is not to be hoped that it will be acceptable to the feelings of all who might read it. It is not until the entire book and the appendices have been read that it becomes obvious that the authoress has made an intense and sincere effort to maintain the utmost objectivity towards her subject although she herself is female and a mother.

The widespread dawning of interest in the emotional aspects of motherhood, infancy, childhood, and adolescence is having a most salutary effect in stimulating and supporting research in these areas. However, most workers in the field of emotional problems are hampered by the difficulty of establishing any sort of proper controls and the hazard of subjecting interview-obtained material to statistical analysis.
