This volume is based on a conference held in November, 1957. The first 2 papers, 20 pages in the book, are devoted to the physiology and biochemistry of bilirubin metabolism and to a few brief comments on its clinical significance. Although this section is well presented, it was completed over 3 years ago and is already seriously out-of-date, thus dramatizing the rapid progress being made in this field. One might well inquire as to the propriety of publishing at such a late date; in essence, promulgating errors or erroneous concepts.

The major portion of this book, pages 21 through 246, is devoted to the pathology and pathogenesis of kernicterus. One of the major defects of this section is the inadequacy of the clinical and laboratory data in a large percentage of the cases presented.
