Abstract

This new edition of Dr. Crosse's well-known book has been completely revised. The chapter, "Complications Liable to Occur in the Premature Baby," and the sections on atelectasis, kernicterus, staphylococcal infections, and antibiotics have been rewritten. New statistics have been added.

A great deal of the experience cited was obtained in the Sorrento Maternity Hospital in Birmingham, England. This unit has facilities for 32 infants and 4 mothers. Infants are followed until one year of age in a follow-up clinic. By the end of 1959, a total of 6,824 infants had passed through the unit. A little over 19% had been born in that hospital, and the remainder were admitted after birth in their homes or in other hospitals. The unit is recognized by the Ministry of Health for the training of doctors, midwives, and "health visitors" in the care of premature infants. This explains why reference can be found to
