Abstract

When this handbook first appeared in 1955, a reviewer for the Archives of Diseases in Childhood praised it lavishly. He concluded, "On the shelf beside a multivolumed system of pediatrics, one is reminded of Jack the Giant Killer. Amazing value for 3 dollars." Six years later, the fourth edition—for only 50 cents more—continues to warrant acclaim. As the authors specify, their objective is "... a concise and readily available digest of the material necessary for the diagnosis and management of pediatric disorders." It is "... intended to supplement rather than replace more complete pediatric texts and reference works."

Carried handily in the pocket or the little black bag, this book has established its appeal to students, house officers, and practitioners. (It enjoys a French edition and shortly will appear in Spanish, Japanese, and Greek editions.) One can hardly slight the book itself if it be misused by a few. If this be
