This is a valuable little book. It cannot be emphasized too much that "spot diagnosis" has no place in developmental assessment and that there are techniques available to the pediatrician allowing a similar degree of diagnostic accuracy to that pertaining in other fields of pediatric practice. Too little attention has been paid to this important subject; moreover, problems in these areas have been diverted into the by-no-means satisfactory hands of the classically trained neurologist or to the psychologist.

Those familiar with the Gesell Developmental Schedules will notice many differences in Professor Illingworth's book. He has apparently used his modifications to good effect in his own practice and is entitled therefore to recommend them. However, those using the Gesell Schedules will not necessarily see a great need to change.
