The present book represents a collection of papers by 11 authorities on phenylketonuria under the editorship of Frank Lyman. Quite appropriately, the volume is dedicated to Dr. Asbjörn Fölling, whose discovery of the disease opened up so many new areas of investigation in mental retardation. The first chapter on the discovery of phenylketonuria provides a fascinating story of how a trained scientist with a little more than average curiosity can uncover the defect where other recognized medical authorities had failed.
Taken as a whole, the volume provides a detailed and complete survey of all the investigations carried out on phenylketonuria during the past three decades and particularly during the past five years. It suffers from the fact that it is overly long and repetitious in many areas. For example, the nature of the metabolic lesion and the use of dietary therapy are discussed in much the same way in several
