Prof A. V. Neale is approaching retirement, and therefore it is particularly pleasant to have this publication appear now. The book is a compilation of the University of London Health Lectures given in 1961 by Professor Neale, and they leave us with a fine picture of what the author has spent a lifetime emphasizing and teaching: the constant necessity for keeping in perspective our attempts at improving child health; and how essential it is to study the living child in his family, whatever the environment, whatever the era.

The chapters are no wooly philosophizing. They record Professor Neale's great experience and his two major interests. First, there is a delightful opening account of the development of child health since before Christ, and this leads later to the conclusion that in spite of all our great advances, there are enormous gaps in the preventive areas, particularly perinatally.
