Fielding H. Garrison was one of the "various authors" of the late Isaac A. Abt's once prominent eight volume textbook where his 170 pages on "History of Pediatrics" served as the initial chapter. Its reissue rescues from a hidden and often forgotten location this work which has not been equaled by any written in the English language on that subject, including part of our century.
The role of the infant and child in various civilizations and ages receives a most interesting treatment from the viewpoint of sociology, folk-medicine, and arts with a great number of references adding to the usefulness of these chapters. The scattered elements of early medicine concerned with childhood are systematically collected, and a chronology of men and events extending into the later-emerging special field of pediatrics makes up the greatest part of the book.
