This book is a welcome addition to the literature on speech pathology in that it provides a much-needed source of information that should be valuable to the practicing physician as well as to others who may be interested in this field. The first two sections of the volume contain a brief discussion of the "Normal Development" and "Mechanisms" of speech and language with a cursory but adequate treatment of the complex factors that are involved.

The third section covers the broad spectrum of "Disorders" in a succinct factual manner, avoiding controversial material that might cause confusion. The chapters on mental retardation, stuttering, and emotional disorders are particularly well presented. The distinction that the authors made between autistic and schizophrenic children is especially interesting. From the pediatricians point of view, the book might have been improved by expanding the available list of references to include others that might help him in
