Not quite a textbook, the Synopsis of Pediatrics by Dr. James Hughes and his colleagues in Tennessee is an excellent summary of the many factors affecting children in health and disease, and the net results of their influences. The initial effort has been greatly improved in this second edition by completing and expanding the index and by inclusion of new topics such as the chapter on chromosomal abnormalities.
This book is at its best when summing up broad topics such as growth and development, psychological development and counselling, problems in fluid and electrolyte balance, and principles governing the management of the allergic child. Throughout the book, sound principles are expressed and the section on physical examination, written from personal experience by the principal author, is superb. Every work has its drawbacks.
