In the beginning of this century, the Neumann-Neurode system of exercises for infants was developed in Germany. Claims were made that the normal development of infants can be accelerated, as well as strength and coordination, by these exercises. Likewise, it was believed that certain musculoskeletal defects such as kyphosis and scoliosis could be corrected. The present monograph makes the same claims. The introductory chapters are well written; precautions are adequately presented. The exercises for normal infants are clearly depicted. The last part of the volume is devoted to a few corrective exercises for various disabilities in this age group; the examples presented are quite interesting.
The author personally does not believe that baby gymnastics are needed for adequate development of the normal infant. This is admittedly a controversial field. However, the author believes, as do many authorities, that a normal child, given a normal degree of attention at home, will
