ENCEPHALOPATHY AND FATTY DEGENERATION OF THE VISCERA

Abstract

To the Editor.—In the August 1967 issue of the American Journal of Diseases of Children (114:152-156), Bradford and Latham reviewed the literature on the syndrome of "encephalopathy and fatty degeneration of the viscera" first described under this name by Reye et al1 of Sydney, Australia. Nine cases since reported by me from Auckland, New Zealand, can be added to the 83 collected by the above authors. Although I agree that many features are of nonspecific nature, I would question in part the grounds on which Drs. Bradford and Latham base their conclusion that the syndrome cannot as yet be considered as a specific entity. They stated their belief that "the morphology of the liver is not significantly different from that of children dying from toxic, nutritional, and bacterial diseases." I believe that it is important to note that the primary basis for selection of the nine cases
