This volume, the ninth in a series published annually by the American Society for Microbiology, contains 91 of the 170 papers presented at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy held in Washington, DC, on Oct 27 to 29, 1969.
The book begins with the text of the stimulating address given at the opening of the conference by Dr. Albert B. Sabin, President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 1969. The remainder of the book is a collection of the scientific papers grouped under nine major areas of interest. These include sections dealing with the use of antibiotics to elucidate cell biochemistry, the pharmacological action of antimicrobials, antimicrobial resistance, viral studies, treatment of human infections, experimental animal studies, and new antibiotics. Phosphonomycin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, is the new antibiotic featured in this volume.
