This short handbook has the unique quality of having been written cooperatively by a pediatrician, a speech pathologist, and an audiologist. The authors' style is clear and direct, and there is little in the way of professional jargon to get in the way of the message. The scope of the book includes a discussion of the development of hearing, speech, and language, the conditions which disrupt this development, the diagnosis of communication problems, and methods of dealing with them in practice. The authors have done a commendable job of outlining the various communication disorders and describing for the pediatrician practical methods of dealing with them. An attempt is made to dispel some common misconceptions about communication disorders, especially the age that hearing testing can be initiated.

Many of the problems presented in this handbook would benefit from more discussion. To have presented greater detail would, however, have destroyed the obvious
