It is of considerable interest as well as curiosity when an assistant professor of surgery writes the most detailed analyses of any patients with leprosy that has ever been done to date. This paradox is explained by the fact that this was initiated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and assisted by two famed Mexican leprologists, Dr. Fernando Latapi and Dr. José Barba Rubio, from an amazing and active outpatient dispensary in Mexico City, the Centra Dermatologica Pascua. Here, under the direction of Professor Latapi for many years, excellent clinical teaching in all phases of leprosy has been done. Also, experts from Carville assisted.
The purpose of this work of Hill and his associates was to submit these untreated patients with leprosy to intense investigative studies. The patients included a lepromatous patient with diffuse vasculitis characteristic of Mexican leprosy, Lucio phenomenon. The second patient had this
