This volume brings together a melange of contributions that has something to offer to anyone interested in infectious diseases and chemotherapy, both basic and applied. The 545 pages embrace 102 papers, all presumably presented in four days. Unfortunately, if there was any discussion, none is presented here.

The material is published under seven headings: "Synthetic Antimicrobial Agents and Chemical Studies," "New Penicillins," "Pharmacological Studies and Toxicology of Antimicrobial Agents," "The Control of Infections in Humans," "Antimicrobial Resistance and Mechanism of Action," "In Vitro Antimicrobial Action," and "Experimental Studies of Infection in Animals and Humans."

Space does not permit an analysis or discussion of many of the interesting papers. Two of the larger sections involve the newer penicillins and in vitro antimicrobial testing. The former group of papers emphasize the continuing importance of penicillin in clinical medicine and the second group includes a rather pedestrian type of clinical investigation. Of considerable
