This book is a collection of 21 papers, with comments, presented at a symposium in Leiden, The Netherlands, November 1970—the third in a series under the auspices of the Dutch Growth Foundation. The list of distinguished authors and research workers comprises 16 from the host country, three from Great Britain, and three from this country. Not many of these names, with the possible exceptions of Berry Brazelton from the United States, and Prechtl and his co-workers, such as Kalverboer and Akiyama, for example, from Groningen will, I believe, be familiar to many pediatricians in this country, even to those working in the areas of pediatric neurology and neurodevelopment.

However, the range of subjects covered comprises a fascinatingly, and indeed formidably wide range. Thus, we may journey from the neuroanatomical studies of Ariëns Kappers on the limbic system to a discussion of possible effects of emotional deprivation on behavior by Croughs.
