Most physicians who have practiced have had the urge to share their experience with others. This can result in writing a letter to the editor of a medical periodical, a case report, a scientific article or, for some, a book. The impulse to write may have pedagogic, egocentric, pecuniary, or altruistic origins, often dependent on the expected readership. Most busy practitioners cannot find the time to write, which is unfortunate, since much of what they do that is important in providing health care is not taught in medical schools or house officer training programs.
