The new book by Dr. Spock contains a wealth of important, valuable information about families, children, and youth based on the author's extensive experience, his knowledge of psychology and psychiatry, and his passionate sense of responsibility toward society, peace, and morality.

The opinions expressed are almost all sound in my estimation. I think the overall emphasis on idealism, morality, and the value systems needed for family life and childrearing in our society is laudable.

Outstanding chapters, in my opinion, are those on giving children increased responsibility, the "joy of giving," and the section on discrimination. Another excellent chapter deals with the effects of divorce and with an approach to the child's concerns about separated parents, and new relationships. This section I think would be helpful to professionals as well as patients. The chapter on drug use by children is sensible and would be helpful to most parents. It deals lucidly
