In his preface, John H. Menkes, MD, apologizes for adding another textbook on pediatric neurology to a sizable list of relatively recent books on the subject. However, in my opinion this was not necessary, for this book is a significant addition, probably the most useful text for the widest group of readers, certainly including general pediatricians. More significant than my own reaction is the fact that, in short order, this has become the book most frequently seen in the hands of students and house officers with whom I come in contact. This implied judgment is probably more important than the solemn reflections of a professor whose most extensive look at a textbook is in the context of a formal review. In summary, I can recommend the work of Dr. Menkes and his relatively few collaborators as a most useful addition, and certainly accept his apology.
