This volume, like the first edition, is intended to provide thoroughly updated and authoritative information for the medical student and practitioner on the available antimicrobial therapy and its use in the management of infectious diseases. It has succeeded in these respects and has included many useful improvements.

The two major divisions of the book have been maintained. The first part includes, under the general heading "Applied Pharmacology," an introductory chapter on the mechanisms and factors influencing the actions of antimicrobial drugs, another on susceptibility tests, and 16 chapters each dealing with groups of drugs that are related either chemically or functionally. Seven of these chapters are entirely new and deal mostly with agents "that have come on the scene or have assumed new importance since 1970."
