Thirteen papers from a symposium entitled "The Infant at Risk: Early Detection and Preventive Intervention," which brought together child health workers from the fields of medicine, psychiatry, nutrition, and the social sciences, have been published in the book, "The Infant at Risk." This book offers the reader some of the dividends and also some of the disadvantages of attending a symposium. Papers on a wide range of topics varying greatly in content and quality have been presented by a series of distinguished authorities. The reader keenly feels the absence of the discussions and questions that presumably followed each presentation, as well as the corridor conversations that undoubtedly clarified and expanded issues for those who attended the symposium. Repeatedly as one reads through this book, the question arises as to when the conference was held, but unfortunately no date is ever given.
