Volume 21 of Advances in Pediatrics is the latest in a series published by the Year Book Publishers since 1942. In the preface of the first volume, under the editorship of Dr Adolph DeSanctis, the tone of the whole series was set with the statement that its contents were "in no sense a compilation of abstracts, but rather a collection of personalized monographs by outstanding authorities." The pattern has been clearly maintained throughout the ensuing volumes of the series. Dr Samuel Levine, the second editor, who replaced Dr DeSanctis after the first volume was published, had a long career from 1947 to 1968. Dr Irving Schulman then assumed the editorship in 1969. Under his leadership, the volume has nearly doubled its content and has been published annually.
This latest volume clearly maintains past standards of excellence. There are nine subjects covered on a range that is wide enough to attract
