This is the third volume in a series that focuses on the study of child variance. Whereas the first and second volumes dealt with theories of child variance and intervention techniques, respectively, this volume deals with service delivery systems that provide treatment to children. This volume reviews the history, organizational structures, and characteristics of delivery systems in America, and also analyzes how these systems work within a community.
In the preface, the authors suggest that the overall frame of reference for this volume is essentially a structural analysis of the composite social contracts. The importance of reviewing these delivery systems in detail is based on the realization that they provide the main contact for society with the problem of child variance. The authors further recognize that although theories and interventions can be proposed and altered, the systems and institutions have power and influence unique to themselves that must be recognized
