The classic first edition of the Atlas was published a quarter of a century ago by Sir Thomas Fairbank. Until the mid 1960s, it was the premiere atlas for generalized affections of the skeleton.

This second edition is a revision that is significantly altered in style and content from the first. It includes detailed descriptions of some difficult and rare disorders and shorter descriptions of conditions familiar to modern orthopedic surgeons, to whom such patients may be referred for opinion. The exclusion of case histories in this edition enhances the atlas format. New is a recognition of the influence of genetics in providing clues to diagnosis and in shaping advice to parents. Each discussion includes reference to inheritance and frequency.

Overall, the authors are true to Sir Thomas's original intent, that is, to provide an atlas helping toward the diagnosis of those rare conditions in which there is major skeletal
