With over 1,000 pages, this volume may now be stretching the designation of a "synopsis." Moreover, this reviewer's reading of the book suggests that its style and quality make it more of a textbook anyway. Dr Hughes writes in his preface that this is the last volume he will edit himself, sadly so as he has handled this "synopsis" very ably over its 21 years of publication. The next volume will be under Dr Griffith's editorship.
At a modest price, this volume in soft cover spans the field of pediatrics in a readable, usable, and accessible style. Written entirely by people in Memphis, it is a remarkable feat but also a great convenience for its editors. The subject headings are conventional, with five entirely new chapters in this edition: intensive care, dermatology, urology, otolaryngology, and laboratory values.
