This volume is a revision of Rutter and Hersov's first edition, which appeared in 1976. The current edition contains 18 new chapters, with new emphasis on adolescents and new contributions by American authors. The editors have done a scholarly job in pulling together the current state of knowledge regarding the diagnosis and treatment of emotional disorders of children. The chapters are very readable, reasonably free of jargon, and well organized. Of particular value are the data presented on the prevalence and outcome of various disorders.

Inevitably in a book of this size (960 pp) one expects encyclopedic information and it is therefore disappointing to find numerous areas that have been neglected or treated too lightly. Missing is any discussion of the legal or ethical issues involved in private practice, research, or organ donations. A second weakness concerns the areas of child psychiatry and the law.
