Abstract

Five years ago, the first edition of Joe Volpe's Neurology of the Newborn was rightly heralded as a classic text in the field. This new edition adds accomplishments of the intervening five years, with updates and new sections on hydrocephalus, degenerative diseases, positron-emission tomography scanning, and Doppler imaging. This edition covers the advances in this rapidly changing field well, while retaining the thorough, basic material for which the first edition was so well received.

For the next edition, Dr Volpe might consider covering the rapidly changing advances in magnetic resonance scanning, neonatal acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and new therapies. Perhaps he will also include a section on the troubling medical-legal-ethical issues relating to neonatal brain death, the creation of new neurologic morbidity in nursery graduates, and malpractice issues evolving from problems in the nursery.
