As noted in the foreword of this book, "One question seldom considered by new primary care physicians is how they will relate to the ten percent of all children who have handicaps or chronic health impairments." This multiauthored book, largely written by the author and his colleagues at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, is geared toward helping these physicians deal with developmentally delayed and learning disabled children.

The book is divided into two major sections, the first dealing with techniques and assessment of management and the second addressing specific disorders. Page limitations restrict the discussions of specific disorders to overviews. For example, the chapter on "Disorders of Speech and Language Development" includes only a sketchy summary of childhood dysphasias, and newer information on the neuropsychological substrates of these disorders is not included.
