In Reply.—I thank Ms Metz for her letter about the use of helmets for children who ride bicycles. I agree that it is extremely important to distribute information about bicycle helmets to physicians, teachers, parents, and store owners.
While the true effectiveness of bicycle helmets has yet to be evaluated, available evidence suggests they may prevent serious morbidity. However, it remains difficult to buy helmets for children and even more difficult to get information about which helmet to buy.
I had a frustrating personal experience trying to purchase bicycle helmets for my own two children. Many toy stores and bicycle shops I visited did not even carry helmets suitable for children, and several tried to sell small adult helmets to me for my 5-year-old son. Moreover, none of the store employees knew anything about what makes one helmet better than another. Finally, the cost of such helmets (at least
