We welcome the comments of Drs Severus, Ahrens, and Stoll. We believe that prospective longitudinal follow-up of patients with cardiovascular disease and comorbid depression, the documentation of biologic markers such as omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, and correlation of affective symptoms with these markers, may provide incremental steps in determining the importance of such factors in the pathophysiology of depression associated with heart disease.
