To the Editor In their article, Maust et al1 concluded that the absolute effect of antipsychotics on mortality in elderly patients with dementia may be higher than previously reported. To assess this, they compared the estimated mortality risk associated with each antipsychotic agent (eg, haloperidol, risperidone, olanzapine, and quetiapine) among patients affected by dementia with the mortality risk in a cohort of nondrug users and a cohort of antidepressant drug users, both affected by dementia as control groups.
