Frieda Fromm-Reichmann is gone, to the sorrow of those who loved and respected her. Greater is the sadness because, with her closest colleagues, she had just begun to turn her attention to the uncultivated field of the manic-depressive psychoses, after a lifetime of work with schizophrenics. Hopefully, some of her students will continue with the depressions, about which so little is known and so much inferred. Fortunately, she lived, thrived, and taught among people who appreciated her as a person and teacher and let this be known during her lifetime. Now that she has passed on, this volume of her best papers is published as a memorial to her work and as an appreciation of her teaching.
