This volume contains the papers presented at a conference on Psychosomatic Aspects of Neoplastic Disease held at Cambridge, England, in July 1963. As is usual with the published proceedings of such conferences, there is little in the way of a developing theme of thought through the book. Successive papers, all succinct abstracts of the original papers, vary greatly in scholarship, in the aspect of cancer considered, and in the methodology used to approach the problem. But each article is thought provoking and the net effect on this reader was to awaken a strong interest in the area. The introductory and concluding chapters, written by leading British cancer researchers, put the reported studies in the broader context of cancer research.
A majority of the papers devote themselves to a consideration of the causal matrix out of which cancer develops. The genes are implicated by Seltzer who shows,
