Arch Surg. 2000;135(6):736-737. doi:

This is the third edition of this Review of Surgery by the faculty at Rush Medical College, Presbyterian–St Luke's Hospital in Chicago, Ill, with prior editions in 1988 and 1994. The editors tasked themselves with rewriting and updating old chapters by carefully blending and incorporating new information to ensure the broadest possible coverage of the field of general surgery. They further purported to provide similar expanded coverage for subspecialists and

"to place even greater emphasis on basic science in recognition of the increased sophistication of clinical care and the need for surgeons to be well versed in the fundamental components of clinical practice."
