It is my pleasure to once again provide the readers of the Archives with an update on the activities that the American College of Surgeons (ACS) is carrying out on behalf of the profession. As the college moves forward, we are paying close attention to how surgery is being redefined for the 21st century. Presently, all stakeholders in the nation's health care system are facing enormous pressure to reduce spending, expand access, and improve quality. Hence, the ACS devotes significant resources to educating health care policymakers about the unique nature of surgery and how their decisions affect our ability to provide optimal care to our patients. In addition, the college continues its historic focus on quality improvement, professional education, and member services.
