I was elected to membership in the Western Surgical Association at its annual meeting 15 years ago, almost to the date, on November 14, 1989. Brad Aust was president, Jack Gibbs was recorder, John Glover was secretary, and David Barnett was treasurer. A year later, I attended the first meeting at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, Ariz. The meeting was extremely interesting, the presidential address by David Ausbaugh was stimulating, the venue was marvelous, and the camaraderie, aided in no small part by the Monday afternoon social program, was tangible: all ingredients that persist to this date and make this association unique.
