Dr John Connolly’s reminiscence of the Loyal Davis’ Honorary Fellowship in the March issue of ARCHIVES brought back a couple of memories for me. My wife Joan and I also attended the ceremony and the black tie dinner that evening. We had been told to arrive shortly before 6:00 PM, when President and Mrs Ronald Reagan were expected. We were warned to be on time because no one would be admitted after President Reagan arrived. As a result, there were a couple dozen guests in line at about 5:50 PM, when the Reagans appeared ahead of schedule. There was a hurried push to get us all inside on time. The next day, there was a small item on the morning news broadcast reporting that the previous evening, President and Mrs Reagan had left the White House early and had left behind the US Air Force officer who always accompanied the President with the nuclear codes. It seems that for a few hours that evening, our country was unprotected against nuclear attack.
