Considerable attention has been paid in recent years to the basic facts of gastric physiology. Many of the older concepts have been scrutinized with the aid of newer experimental methods, with the result that former ideas have been changed or viewed with marked skepticism. The bulk of this work is concerned with the motor activity of the stomach. Less attention has been paid to the chemical activity or at least to the nature of the stimulus causing gastric secretion. The outstanding research on this phase has been that conducted by Lim, Ivy and their associates. Application of the results obtained in investigations on the production of gastric secretion has been found in the formulation of newer methods of examining the contents of the stomach.
