I wish on behalf of my colleagues at the Mayo Clinic and myself to express our thanks for my being invited to speak at this excellent surgical Congress.

It has been a great pleasure for us to receive some of your outstanding surgeons at the Mayo Clinic, beginning with Yudin in 1937, Djaneledze and Rufanov in 1947, and more recently, Vishnevsky, Petrov, Uglov, and Osipov and several other of your medical scientists, and it is my pleasure to return these visits.

I have enjoyed visiting many of your surgical clinics in Moscow and Leningrad and, in addition, the Pavlov Institute, your University, and your libraries. The surgical work is commendable, as is the work of your associates in anesthesia and surgical nursing. I believe your surgical achievements will continue apace with those of other countries and will also be a great contribution to your work of advancing the field of
