Dr. Frank P. Brooks, writing from a long and wide experience in physiology, has successfully produced a concise summary of gastrointestinal function and the mechanisms which control it. The monograph reviews the recent and vast contributions to gastrointestinal physiology in a brief but lucid manner. Material, frequently poorly understood by practitioners (bile salt metabolism, fat digestion, and micellar formation), is discussed in a simple, readable fashion which does not suffer from the jerky style of many summaries. The organization and content of the book are good. At the end of each chapter references are cited which include appropriate textbooks as well as symposia and original papers to which the reader may turn for more detailed information.

The book will appeal to a wide spectrum of medical "students" who wish to survey the subject of the control of gastrointestinal function briefly but in sufficient detail to give them a good working
