This small volume summarizes succinctly the extensive clinical experience of the Institute Gustave Roussy in treating cancer of the breast. Pierre Denoix and his colleagues have clearly stated the methods they have employed in evaluating and treating 1,174 patients in the period from 1954 through 1962. Among the many interesting subjects covered in the work is the description of the multidisciplinary committee of physicians which has evaluated and treated all patients. It is clear that every effort has been made to exercise the very best of objective judgment in determining the type of treatment and its timing.

This patient population was studied in great detail and the results are at least as good as those achieved in any other first class center. Here one will find answers to many questions relating natural history to prognosis, as in their concept of "developing disease." Prognostic factors in mammography are pointed out, and
