In this excellent and concise monograph, Dr. Monafo presents an up-to-date and practical work on the care of burns. The repetitions and inconsistencies of many compendiums are avoided, but the author's personal preferences are reflected in some of the conclusions offered. The book includes a limited historical review and does not attempt to summarize all current laboratory work but concentrates on a remarkably complete survey of the therapeutic modalities currently available.
Particularly impressive is his review of the multiple fluid regimens that have been proposed for burn resuscitation, none of which should be strictly followed. Dr. Monafo's own hypertonic lactated saline solution with which adequate electrolytes are administered without the large amounts of water usually used is still experimental but has shown impressive early results.
