A conference on intravenous hyperalimentation was held in November 1970 in San Antonio, Tex. It was attended by clinicians who pioneered use of that technique and by several authorities on nutrition and intermediary metabolism. Cowan and Scheetz's book is a compilation of the formal presentations that were made there and the discussions that followed.

The meeting was a kind which usually occurs when a field has evolved to a stage where there is generally acknowledged need for reassessment of collective clinical experience and redefinition of remaining problems. The conference report that results is useful to a general reader if it assembles information that is otherwise either scattered or unavailable into readable, interpreted form. The book does so very well.
