To the Editor.—I am writing to discuss the article in the Archives entitled "Elevated Gastrin Levels After Pancreatic Duct Ligation" by Basso et al (105:611, 1972).
The authors conclude in the summary and also on page 614 that, "Inhibition of acid secretion by fat was relatively as efficient following as before pancreatic duct ligation." This conclusion in my opinion is not warranted on the basis of the data presented by the authors. They used a solution of hydrolyzed fat consisting primarily of fatty acids, not fat. It has been reported on numerous occasions that especially long chain fatty acids such as oleic acid will inhibit gastric secretion by themselves. The authors should refer carefully to the work of Long and Brooks in this regard. These fatty acids of course do not require hydrolysis and thus do not require the presence of pancreatic juice in order to cause acid inhibition. In
