There is a need today for a more detailed textbook of pediatric orthopedics for the resident and practicing orthopedic surgeon. The amount of pediatric orthopedic material available for training purposes is so limited that a resident may have restricted exposure to the field and need of an authoritative text to refer to during his orthopedic career.
There are few orthopedic surgeons with an extensive expertise in pediatric orthopedics worth recording. Furthermore, the task is undoubtedly an overwhelming and commendable one. Dr. Sharrard has attempted to answer the need in a large, expensive text. His language and photographs are all excellent. The text is very readable. His bibliography, while extensive, is incomplete and does not include some classic American references. His chapters are area-oriented or disease-oriented and not "problem"-oriented. He gives many recommendations for therapy but no statistics to support them.
